PSLE English Creative Writing

Primary 6 English

Creative Writing: Writing Paragraphs

Using paragraphs is a good way to organize your ideas in the essay that you are about to write.

A paragraph is a piece of writing that consists of one or more sentences. A paragraph always starts on a new line.

Example:

It has been 10 years since I last saw her. Time does change a person. Her once bedazzling Hollywood smile is replaced with a permanent frown. The twinkle in her eyes had lost the sparkle… …

Building Suspense And Climax

Creating or building suspense and climax determines how good you, as the writer, are able to withhold the information from the reader.

You must be able to hold back certain information to create a sense of anticipation in the reader. You should only reveal information at different stages where they can give the plot the best impact. In addition, you should also make sure that the story flows well when the information is revealed.

Below are the steps in creating suspense and building climax.

Besides creating the plot, you have to plan how to build the climax. You can either

1.       Set the mood, create suspense then climax   OR

2.       Decide the climax, then set the mood and suspense

Tip: There is no fixed order to but you, as the writer, must know how the story goes before writing it down.

Challenge:

Imagine you are trapped in Jurassic Park with hungry, human-eating dinosaurs lurking all around. Create a plot and build up the suspense on how you escape from a

a)            pack of cunning veloceraptors

b)           starving, merciless tyrannosaurus rex (~100 words)

Note: What interesting words or phases do you know that you could use in the passage?
